Welcome to the Alton Public Library & Historical Museum!

Alton Public Library plans to re-open on Wednesday, June 3

  • Hours (until further notice)

Monday, Wednesday and Friday -- 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Older and high risk patrons -- 10:00am - 12:00 noon

General public -- 12:00 - 4:00 pm

  • No one under 16 years old will be allowed in the library unless accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver.
  • Each person is allowed to be in the library 30 minutes per day.
  • Only 2 computers will be available for use – Limited to 30 minutes daily and sanitizing will take place between patron uses.
  • Public restrooms and the water fountain are not available.
  • Social distancing while in the library is required. Masks are optional.
  • The number of people in the library at a time will be limited.
  • Newspapers may be read and checked out.
  • Printing, copying, and faxing services will be available.
  • Returns are only accepted using the outdoor dropbox.

PLEASE NOTE: Our dropbox is open for returns. We encourage patrons to return items that were due in March and April so they can be quarantined for the allotted amount of time before being checked in and put back on the shelf for others to check out.

Let us know what you'd like to check out and the library staff will get it ready for you to pick up!
Here are some directions for this new library service:
1. Click on "Search Our Catalog" on our website homepage.  Log into your account using the numbers on the back of your library card for login and your phone number as your password.  Search for the books that you would like to check out and click on "Reserve This Item."
Other options are to message us your requests on the Alton Public Library Facebook page or email us at 
2. Wait for us to contact you to let you know your items are ready for pickup. This may or may not be the same day as your request depending upon whether we have staff available.
3. Come to the library where your order will be waiting for you on the bench in front of the library.

SRP_2020Our library will be having a Summer Reading Program beginning Monday, June 8 with only reading logs and prizes.  We will not be hosting any programs at the library this summer. Watch for more information to come!

Transparent Language Online - A web-based language learning program that includes 100 languages.  On your first visit, you will need to create an account including your library card number.  After that, continue to log in to your account to keep working through the lessons.
