Policy Statement
The library is a public space, but it is not responsible for supervising children. Children are the responsibility of their parent, guardian, or caregiver at all times while in the library. Library staff cannot act as caregivers or monitor children’s behavior outside of organized library programs.
Guidelines for Children:
1.    Children Under 9 Years Old:
o    Children ages 8 and under must be accompanied and directly supervised by a parent, guardian, or designated caregiver aged 14 or older at all times.
o    Library staff may intervene if a child is unattended and at risk, but the library cannot provide ongoing supervision.
2.    Children 9–12 Years Old:
o    Children in this age range may visit the library without direct supervision for brief periods, provided they can follow library rules and are capable of responding to emergencies.
o    Parents/guardians remain responsible for their children’s safety and behavior.
o    Children engaging in disruptive behavior will be subject to the code of conduct policy.
3.    Teenagers (13–17 Years Old):
o    Teens may use the library independently but are expected to follow all library rules.
o    Parents/guardians remain responsible for their teen’s safety and behavior.
o    Teenagers engaging in disruptive behavior will be subject to the code of conduct policy.

Safety Procedures
•    Library staff will attempt to locate a parent or guardian if a child appears to be unattended or in distress.
•    If a child is left unattended for an extended period or exhibits unsafe behavior, staff may contact local authorities or Child Protective Services if necessary.
•    Children should not be left in the library during emergencies or at closing time.

Library Programs
•    During library programs (story times, classes, etc.), children are expected to be accompanied by an adult unless the program is specifically designed for independent participation.
